The business was established in 1923 by Joseph W Sher (1894-1981) who was later joined by his sons Gerald "Jerry" Robert Sher (born 1926) and Alvin Irving Sher (1921-1994). Joseph remained president until 1970. |

Joseph Sher was a son of Nellie Kaner Sher (1863-1932) and Samuel B Sher (1870-1942). He was the first of their five children.
