2022 Hertz Family Reunion

The Hertz Family Reunion was held in August 2022 and was highly successful.

2022 Family Reunion - The Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Generation Hertz cousins, descendents of Frieda Zneimer and Izor Naftolie Hertz, are planning to meet in the Twin Cities the weekend of August 26-28, 2022. The reunion will be preceded by an optional gathering in scenic Northern Minnesota at Naniboujou Lodge in Grand Marais, on Lake Superior on August 22, 23, and 24. Lots of elder-friendly, kid-friendly, active-friendly, and foodie-friendly activities and tours will be featured Also, the timing coincides with the famous Minnesota State Fair. All descendants of the original six Hertz brothers are welcome, including their partners, spouses, and children. Please see the Hertz Reunion 2022 Facebook for more information and pictures. Nanci is a fourth generation descendent of Izor Naftolie Hertz (1839-1913) and Frieda Zneimer Hertz (1856-1916). Their descendents are documented in a family tree included on this website. The following information on the origins of the Zneimer and Hertz families below was written by Dick Platkin: "As far as I know the all Zneimers came from Kuldiga/Goldigen, Latvia, and the Hertz's came from Jaunjelgava, Latvia. We, in fact, visited both cities several summers ago based on information from Mark Hertz in St. Paul, Eleonora Zneimer (a distant cousin who lives in the Ukraine), and Chris Jamison, who has done his own family tree, quite similar to yours, but with many more branches of the Zneimers who came from Latvia." "Not sure where the Holland story came from but I heard it, as well, from my mother Fritzie (Frieda) Hertz Platkin, but there is no known basis for it -- unless you have some information we have never seen. We do know that there is a city in the Bohemia, in the Czech Republic, called Zneim, and the assumption is that the Zneimers originated there and then moved to Latvia, probably pushed further north by pogroms. We also visited Zneim on a previous trip." Note from Fred Hertz: "The reference to Jaunjelvgava is likely a mistake, as that city was known as Friedrichstatt and is located in south-central Latvia. Instead, the family stories often refer to the city of Mitau, which is known now as Jelgava. It is in the western region of Latvia, and alongside a river - and thus is consistent with the family stories about owning an inn alongside a river. But maybe not!"

The Second Generation Frieda and Izor Naftolie had 12 children, according to the 1900 census form. Only six of the children were living in 1900, and four were still living at home. The six living children were all sons. They are listed and pictured below with links to additional info on each.
