Gilven Max Slonim, 87, of Falls Church, Va., formerly of Duluth, died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2000, in Inova Fairfax Hospital after a heart attack.

Dr. Slonim ws born in Duluth to Susie and Sam Slonim. He graduated from Central High School in 1932. He reitred in 1965 from the office of the chief of Naval Operations, after a career as a wartime intelligence officer and combat commander. He founded the Oceanic Education Foundation in 1970.

He is survived by his children, retired Navy Lt. Cmdr. Richard G. Slonim of Charleston, S.C., David R. Slonim of Savannah, Ga., and Patricia S. Gordon of Falls Church; a brother, retired Navy Capt. Charles E. Slonim of Manassas, Va.; three grandchildren; and cousins, including Edward (Dorothy) Slonim of Duluth.

Memorial service: was held Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, in Erverly Wheatley Funeral Home, Alexandria, Va.
