Deceased Name: NORMAN L. LEVINE

Norman L. Levine, 85, of St. Louis Park, Minn., formerly of Duluth, died Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999.

 

Norman was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps. In World War II, he served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army. He took part in a secret intelligence mission involving the planning and staging of signal corps troops before the invasion of North Africa. He was a newspaper reporter for more than 25 years, for four daily newspapers including the Duluth News-Tribune, the Long Beach (Calif.) Press-Telegram, San Francisco Call Bulletin, and San Francisco Examiner. He was speech writer for former San Francisco mayor George Christopher in his campaign for the U.S. Senate; editor of the Western Mineral Survey, a mining industry weekly in Salt Lake City; associate editor of publications for the Denver Rio Grande Railway and editor of the Labor World, Duluth. He was also a free-lance writer and photographer.

 

He was vice commander of E. Porter Alexander Post, VFW, the American Legion, and a member of then-mayor George Johnson's Duluth Veteran's Advisory Committee. He was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

 

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Agnes; his second wife, Joan; a brother, George; and a sister, Ruth.

 

He is survived by a daughter, Marilyn (Gary) Rose; a sister, Mary Loeb; grandchildren Alise (Gary) Goldberger and Jeffrey (Kirsten) Rose; and great-grandchildren Emily, Matthew and Sonya.

 

Service: 9:30 a.m. today in Hodroff and Sons, Minneapolis. Burial 2 p.m. today in Tifereth Israel Cemetery. Memorials to Jewish War Veterans or donor's favorite charity.
