Dr. Israel H. Lavine, 92, of Hammond Avenue died Wednesday, April 21, 1999, in St. Mary's Medical Center.
He was born to Sarah (Chucker) and Harry Lavine on May 1, 1906, in Superior and was a city resident most of his life.
He attended University of Wisconsin-Superior and completed his medical degree at University of Wisconsin-Madison. He was in private practice in Melrose, Wis., for 20 years. In 1956, he returned to Superior to join his brother, Dr. Max M. Lavine, in private practice. Together with a group of local doctors, he founded Superior Clinic in 1965. He retired from medical practice in 1987.
He was one of the leaders in building the new Temple Beth El in Superior.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Harriet H. Rosen Lavine, on Sept. 15, 1975; brothers Dr. Max Lavine, on Sept. 18, 1981, and Ben Lavine, on Jan. 12, 1999; and a sister, Elsie Lavine.
He is survived by his children Sharon (Daniel) Mosenkis of Fairlawn, N.J., Susan Lavine (John) Coleman of Cambridge, Mass., and Steven (Janet Sternburg Lavine) Lavine of Encino, Calif.; four grandchildren; and a sister, Rose (Irving) Eisenberg of San Francisco.
Service: 2:30 p.m. Friday in Downs Funeral Home, Superior. Rabbi Amy Bernstein of Temple Israel, Duluth, officiating. Interment in Superior Hebrew Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Book Purchased Fund, which will be established at the Superior Public Library in honor of Dr. I.H. Lavine and his friend, the late Barry Singer.
