Deceased Name: Henry H. Cohen
Henry H. Cohen, 80, of Hammond Avenue, died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 1996, in St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth.
He was born in Duluth and lived in Superior most of his life. He began working in his father's general store in North Dakota, and in 1934 he and his brother, Leonard, started a grocery business together at 1015 Tower Ave. in Superior. He married Edith Levine on March 20, 1937. In 1941, he took over the business, and moved the store to 11th Street, the west side of Tower Avenue. He founded the City Market Distributing Co. in 1955. The Cohen family also owned Frosty Cream Restaurant, Chef's and Frank N' Stein restaurants, and the Zona Rosa and Library restaurants.
The city designated the frontage road in front of the local Wal-Mart and Target stores to be named Henry Cohen Boulevard in honor of him selling the land for the stores to be built.
He was a life member of Hadassah and Douglas County Historical Society. He was an honorary member of Boys Town, and a member and past president of Temple Teth El, Superior Hebrew Congregation and B'nai B'rith. His other memberships include the Superior Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, Eagles, Elks, Moose Lodge, Itasca Masonic Temple and United Commercial Travelers.
He is survived by his wife Edith; two sons, Ted and Dan, both of Superior; a daughter, Joan Whitesell of Plano, Texas; a sister, Mary Felsenberg of St. Paul; six grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
Visitation: 12 until the 1 p.m. funeral service Sunday in Downs Funeral Home, Superior. Interment will be in Tifereth Israel Cemetery, Duluth.
